What does the website of the Barnes Foundation write about the 20th century work of art created by Pierre Bonnard? (© Copyright - Barnes Foundation - barnes foundation)

With the rapid modernization of European cities during the nineteenth century, the domestic interior gained importance as a place of refuge from public life. Urban centers like Paris and New York were plagued by loud noises, crime, bad air, diseases, and bustling crowds. The modern home, by contrast, offered a peaceful environment where individuals could recuperate from the chaos of the new metropolis. Pierre Bonnard delighted in the depiction of intimate interiors, producing countless representations of his friends and family enjoying activities like reading, sewing, and looking at prints. Evening Under the Lamps presents a comfortable bourgeois household lit with a warm glow. Two women and children are engaged in quiet pursuits, though exact nature of their activities is indecipherable. In exchange for narrative precision, Bonnard focuses on the decorative qualities of his subject, covering his canvas in patterns of color and light and rhythmically repeating the glow of the lamps as reflections—in the mirror, on the wall, and in the window. Despite their physical closeness, the four figures do not seem to interact. Even the standing child is compositionally separated from her playmate by the heavy base of a table lamp.
