The scene inspired by Plutarch takes place in a prison. The Spartan king, Agis, which has just been strangled on the orders of Leonidas, lying on the ground, naked torso. His mother, Agésistrate, leaning over her body, holding her right hand. At the entrance of the room where two men are held, to the right on the ground, the body of the grandmother of Agis, Archidamie, is covered with a sheet. The right foreground, a crown and a garment are placed on a bench.

Reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, the picture was also presented at the 1789 Salon (193).
